Covenant Word – The Inevitable Appointment

Text: ‭‭‭‭ Hebrews 9:27-28 (TPT).
27 Every human being is appointed to die once, and then to face God’s judgment.
28 But when we die we will be face-to-face with Christ, the One who experienced death once for all to bear the sins of many! And now to those who eagerly await him, he will appear a second time; not to deal with sin, but to bring us the fullness of salvation.

The Message
The Inevitable Appointment
The only thing that is certain in life is death. It is an appointment that is both not voidable nor avoidable. The tricky part is that we don’t even know what, when, where, how we will die. We do not have the power to defer it. God is the ONLY Decider. We don’t know who is next: it may not start from the oldest nor the youngest. The weakest may not be the next and the strongest may not be the last. It is only God who has the power to postpone the appointment (Psalm 102:20). There are situations when we lose loved ones to the grip of death and we call it “untimely” and even at times feel they were not supposed to be the next on the line. But unfortunately the decisions are not ours. Everyone is waiting in the line, such that everyone is equally likely to be the next – any of us could be called at any time. Both great and small, young are old, rich and poor are all likely.

The only thing we have somewhat control over is our destination after death: when “we will be face-to-face with Christ, the One who experienced death once for all to bear the sins of many!”. (Hebrews 9:28 TPT). Everyone will fall under one of the two possible groups. One group will die once and return to live with their Maker in eternal bliss and unspeakable joy. They are the people whose names are written in the book of life. (Revelation 20:12-15). The second group will die the second time, where they will be eternally separated from the Prince of peace. (Revelation 21:8). And they will be tormented in the lake of fire without end. (Revelation 14:10).

When we remember the beloved ones who have gone before us, we should also remember that one day, it will be our turn to be remembered. The only thing we can do about the inevitable appointment is to prepare daily to meet our God beyond the sky when it is our turn to be called home. Many of us and most of the time we don’t want to talk about it, but unfortunately keeping mute about our end will not extend our duration on earth.

Confession
I will not miss the blissful place prepared for me.

Prayer
Father, please don’t let me be unprepared for my inevitable appointment, when the time comes.

Reflection
What will be your last activity on earth? Do your best to make every moment as if it will be your last.
